Stephen Harper Cannot Write
I invite gentle readers to consider the following sample from the Right Honourable Prime Minister's letter to the Globe and Mail:
"The same way that Canadians from all walks of life were stunned by this savage, senseless attack on innocent students from one deranged individual."
Now I invite you all to consider sentences. Mrs. Poetschke reminds us that a sentence is A grammatical unit that is syntactically independent and has a subject that is expressed or, as in imperative sentences, understood and a predicate that contains at least one finite verb.
It is the verb predicate that Canada's leader has forgotten in this instance. He has subordinated his clause with the use of the phrase "The same way that," and he has punctuated a dependent clause with a period. This is not a proper use for a period, and it causes his readers to await some action in a following independent clause; however, his readers wait in vain. There is no independent clause.
On behalf of the readers of the Globe and Mail, I would like to ask for an apology from Mr. Harper (or whatever high school intern wrote this letter); moreover, I would like to know when the Prime Minister will resign.

Thank you for an excellent comment.
Jean Chretien massacred both official languages. Give Harper a break.
Chretien never got elected as an uptight economist.
Suanne - NONSENSE! English was Mr. Chretien's 2nd language, my french approaches the level of his english - Harper on the other hand, cannot say that in his defense, english is his first language. He is an idiot. He is an ideological 'know it all' who needs a kick in the ass. I thank God for every day that goes by and brings Canada that much closer to seeing him thrown out of office. Get a better hero.
Great comment leftdog.
Agreed James, the sentence opens leading you down a garden to a brick wall. So what happens after the period? There’s no link to the rest of the article. Now I want to see how bad the whole thing is.
Yeah! Tell us the rest, Harper! If you can...
Geez, private schooling ain't what it used to be, eh?
You know for a guy who seems so keen on slashing the media's access to any one else the hill. To controlling message as far as his grip on power will let him. If you are going to attempt to lead by a consolidation of power. Wouldn't it be nice if Harper weren't so pompous that he was able to have some one in your staff that you trusted proof read your work.
I'm no PMO communications guru, but even my essays in high school got an editing once over.

So you've never heard of calculated sentence fragments? Ever read any literature?
fwank,
Although this is clearly not a calculated scentence fragment.
FWAN,
When Stephen Harper is part of the Cannon I'll forgive him.
Well James, it seems that the PM can't write and can't think. Let get rid of him. Also lets make sure that right wing nut jobs don't get into high government positions again.
To leftdog:
Your argument is moot. Chrétien's French was worse than his English. The man was linguistically challenged with no language bias. The loss of his abilities in French is one of the factors why he was never liked throughout Quebec.
Tha being said, I held Chrétien's language woes against him, so it would be hypocritical of me not to to do the same for our dear "New Prime Minister" (or however we should address him formally in writing, now) Harper.
Here's a calculated sentence fragment for you.
Why did Earnest Hemmingway's chicken cross the road? To die in the rain. Alone.
Hemmingway is allowed, and he is effective. Harper is neither.
Is that a complex compound sentence I see? I think my knees just got weak.
I'd also like to point out that his choice of the preposition "from" is a poor one. It's more idiomatic to refer to an attack "by" an individual.
