Tom Lukiwski's Apology Was Good
The man bit the bullet. I've seen some bad apologies in my time, but this wasn't one of them. While I suspect that he will continue to earn resentment from the LGBTTTQ community, I also suspect that he'll earn a little regard for taking his lumps like a champ.
This is a big story, and I've seen many bloggers attacking him and calling for his resignation. I think piling on is bad form, especially considering that before any of this was reported in the news I had no idea who Tom Lukiwski was. I urge other bloggers to ask themselves whether they did.
One thing I particularly appreciated about his apology was that he didn't mention that he was drinking at the time. The video clearly shows him drinking beer from a bottle, but that is no excuse for anything. Many lesser people use it to excuse their behavior, Lukiwski deserves credit for flatly admitting to his stupidity.
Another thing I appreciated was that he didn't mention his gay friends during the apology. Predjudice, whether it is sexist, racist, homophobic, or otherwise, is not made more permissable by befriending someone from a particular group in society. Many lesser apologies have contained lines like "my friends know I'm actually not homophobic; my friend George is gay!" Lukiwski deserves cridit for owning up to his dumbass comments.
A third thing I applaud was that in his apology he specifically apologized to his staff. Some will remember Stockwell Day blaming his staff for his mistake at Niagara Falls. Staffers are people too, and they are rightly allowed to take pride in their work just as a plumber or a banker does. Lukiwski appropriately noted some of the little people whose lives just got more sucky because of his buffoonery.
Earlier this week I had no clue who this guy was, and I still have no knowledge or opinion of him except based on the newly released tape and his apology. I urge people to temper their response not only because of his mea culpa, but also because it might be your guy who's on YouTube saying something dumb.
Although it likely couldn't be as dumb as this one, oh boy.

Conservative MP Tom Lukiwski makes a final speech. So raucous is the chamber, so loud the press gallery that I can barely hear him declare that the [gay marriage] bill represents “a very slippery slope” that could lead to polygamy.
No pattern here at all...
And 12 Liberal MPs agreed with him.

I thought it was a very good apology. But you're incorrect about him not mentioning his gay and lesbian friends.
"Their friendship and support for me during my entire career and person life has been extremely important to me and today I ask for their forgiveness. Mr. Speaker, just being in the public sphere means little to me compared to ... their opinion towards me and to them I say I am sorry."
Yes he mentioned his friends and apologized to them. He did not, however, use his friendship with members of the LGBTTTQ community to excuse his actions, which is why I wrote about

wilson, Lukiwski seems to have kept his same values - as this was only 3 years ago.
Funny how the gov of New York is forced to resign over something like having sex, or an indian leader is treated as pure poison, but this guy has to say "I'm sorry" and so many are ready to excuse him...
The only reason he said "I'm sorry" is because of the tape - his actions over the years do not demonstrate any "evolvement" of thinking...
I agree with cherniak, that Lukiwski's views have not changed. When voting against SSM he declares: " I was brought up in that environment and I will continue to believe that until the day I die."
"Until the day I die", sounds like a really long time; and hardly the words of a man now devoted to spending the rest of life making up for his 1991 'lapse of judgement.'
However, I have grown accustomed to this kind of thing from the new Conservative Party, which emerged from the extreme Right-Wing Canadian Alliance and Reform Parties, so was not really fazed by the whole thing. What did draw my attention was the fact that Mr. Lukiwski was a former member of the infamous Saskatchewan Conservatives (now called the Saskatchewan Party), during the time that they were embroiled in one of the worst scandals in Canadian history. This was the party of Grant Devine, the premier whose government was so corrupt that criminal charges had to be laid, and several of his ministers were sent to prison, including John Scraba (the architect of the scandal) and Eric Bernston, the former Saskatchewan deputy premier; two men also seen on the tape.
Sadly, we have to remember that supporters of the old reform/Alliance that bred this narrow minded group, don't vote for these guys in spite of their ideology, but because of it. However, even neo-conservatives don't like to have their tax dollars stolen, so I'm focusing on corruption within the ranks, and the Cons are full of it.
They may have actually orchestrated the homophobic outrage to steer us away from who Lubiwski really is.
