Something Every Progressive Blogger Should Do

Recommend this post
Apply for blogger credentials to the 2008 CPC national convention!

Who knows? A few of us might even slip through the cracks and get in! We could be like the Democrats at that Republican shindig in the 90's.

Does anyone want to be an ass kicking quick responder? Sign up everyone!

I've read the NDP's charter. A surprizing amount of it concerns protecting itself from agent provocateurs - that is, those who would destroy the party from within.

Given the history of socialist organizations, I can understand why this is so. But it is also an excellent reason to avoid even the appearance of meddling with other parties' conventions. They just might return the favour, and the voting public would likely view it as anti-democratic.

I applied weeks ago. They don't ask for your political affiliation, but presumably they will actually look at your blog, so it would be rather difficult to pretend to be sympathetic to the Conservative cause.

Since they say that they're looking at your blog's 'influence' and the size of your readership, they have a ready-made excuse not to let in someone like me. But what if Cherniak applied? Or Scott Tribe? That could be interesting.

It would be nice to think they would try to at least give the appearance of even-handedness, but given their history with certain non-conservative members of the mainstream media, I wouldn't be surprised if 'accreditation' was strictly limited to loyal BT members.

Yes, Scott Tribe has been a giant of the blogging world for some time now.

That will get Harper shaking in his boots. Tribe and Cherniak threatening to give an unfavourable spin on the Conservative party for a change.

Factiousness aside, it might be useful for some Liberals to attend this convention. It might inspire them to have a policy convention of their own to touch the grass roots for a change. Lord knows the Liberal rudder has been worn down to a nub for quite some time.

Let's not get carried away here, James. I run a blogging affiliation whose strength is the sum of its parts, not the person who administers the site.

As for the convention itself, Rannit and Dante, specifically:

a) When the Liberals held the 2006 leadership convention, they invited and accredited Stephen Taylor and Greg Staples of the Blogging Tories and their respective individual blogs to attend. They also invited other "progressive" bloggers who weren't Liberal - that would include me at the time (as I hadn't declared myself a Liberal at that point), Wayne Chu, who ran Prog Blog back then, and a corrspondent from the Tyee. They were very fair to all of us.

b) Specifically to Rabbit.. given the above point, there is nothing "agent provacateur" about having bloggers who aren't of your party blogging at your political rival's convention. It shows some open mindedness and willingness to have people not of your POV giving their scope on things.

As a matter of fact, Stephen Taylor sent me a message to say saying he'd hoped I'd apply and that I'd be there at the convention. I doubt I will, but I appreciate his gesture of goodwill.
